Post Operative Instructions for Treatment of Infections

Proper care and adherence to the following instructions are essential for a smooth recovery and effective treatment of your infection. This guide provides detailed steps to help manage common symptoms and ensure the best possible healing process. By following these guidelines, you can facilitate a quicker recovery and prevent any complications.
THE FOLLOWING MAY OCCUR:
- Swelling: Swelling may persist or slightly increase for the first 24 hours, but you should start feeling better with less pain.
- Muscle Stiffness: Stiffness of the muscles may cause difficulty in opening your mouth.
- Numbness or Tingling: Temporary numbness or tingling in the lip, chin, and tongue may occur.
- Dry or Cracked Lips: Keep your lips moist with an ointment to prevent drying and cracking.
- Elevated Temperature: A slight increase in temperature for the first 24 hours is normal.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
- Irrigation: Use the Monoject syringe provided to irrigate with warm salty water into the surgical area after meals as directed until your follow-up appointment.
- Medication: Take all medications exactly as prescribed.
- No Smoking: Avoid smoking to prevent complications.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Heat Application: If directed by your doctor, apply heat to the face for 15 minutes, 4 to 5 times per day.
- Diet: Eat as tolerated, adjusting your diet based on your comfort.
- Avoid Touching: Keep fingers and tongue away from the surgical area to prevent infection.
- Drain Care: If a drain was placed, it will be removed by your surgeon in 2 to 3 days.
- Monitoring Symptoms: Symptoms should improve within 24 to 36 hours. Please contact our office immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent swelling and/or pain
- fever over 101°F
- difficulty and/or pain on swallowing
- shortness of breath
