Welcome! This page provides essential instructions to prepare you for your procedure involving IV anesthesia.
Why These instructions are Important
Your compliance with these instructions is crucial for ensuring your safety during IV anesthesia administration. By following the guidelines provided, you help us create a safe and smooth surgical experience.
BEFORE INTRAVENOUS ANESTHESIA SEDATION
Preparing for Your Surgery:
- Fasting: Do not eat or drink anything (including water and/or oral antibiotics) for 8 hours prior to anesthesia/surgery.
- If you have a medical condition requiring prescribed medication, take it as scheduled with a sip of water unless otherwise directed by your oral surgeon.
- Eating less than 8 hours before may result in serious complications such as vomiting, aspiration, and hospitalization, which can be life-threatening.
- Accompaniment: A responsible adult (18 years or older) must accompany you, remain in the office, and drive you home.
- Minors: A parent or legal guardian must accompany minors.
- Postoperative Care: Someone must stay with you at home throughout the first postoperative night.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing, preferably a short-sleeved shirt for IV access.
- A heated blanket will be provided during surgery.
- Wear secure shoes (no flip-flops, slides, or slip-on shoes without backs).
- Personal Items: Do not wear make-up, nail polish (paint/gel/acrylic), jewelry, or contact lenses.
- Ice Packs: Make ice packs before surgery (e.g., freeze wet and folded washcloths).
- Driving: Do not drive or operate machinery while taking narcotic pain medications for the first 24 hours after surgery.
- Allow 2-3 days for healing before returning to work/school.
- Diet: Prepare soft foods (e.g., Jell-O, applesauce) and plenty of clear fluids (e.g., Gatorade, apple juice) for after surgery.
- No Smoking and Alcohol: No smoking, vaping, or marijuana use for 5 days after surgery and 24 hours before surgery to prevent dry sockets. Avoid alcohol 24 hours before anesthesia/surgery.
- Surgery Schedule Confirmation: Please contact our office 24 hours before surgery to verify the final arrival time.
- Be prepared for potential delays. Although we do our best to stay on time, delays are not uncommon.
- We reserve the right to reschedule your surgery if there is a lack of medical information, recent vaccinations, cold/flu-like symptoms, or sinus infections.
- Cancellation Policy: Please provide 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment to avoid a fee.
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or need further clarification on these instructions. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities.
