WHY THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE IMPORTANT

Your compliance with these instructions is crucial for ensuring your safety during oral sedation. By following the guidelines provided, you help us create a safe and smooth surgical experience. 

BEFORE oral SEDATION

Please follow these instructions to prepare for oral surgery with Oral Sedation.

  • Medication: Bring your prescription medication (oral sedative pill) with you 30 minutes prior to your scheduled procedure. After your paperwork/consents are signed and completed, we will instruct you to take your medication in our office.
  • Fasting: Do not have anything to eat or drink (including water and /or oral antibiotics) for 6 hours prior to sedation procedure.
    • If you have a medical condition requiring you to take prescribed medication(s), please take it as scheduled with a sip of water, unless otherwise notified by your oral surgeon.
    • Eating less than 6 hours prior may result in vomiting, aspiration, and /or hospitalization. It may be life threatening.
  • Accompaniment: A responsible adult 18 years or older must accompany you, remain in the office (or stay inside their parked car), and to drive you home.
  • Minors: A parent or a legal guardian must accompany minors.
  • Ice Packs: Make ice packs prior to surgery. (Suggestion: freeze wet and folded washcloths)
  • Post-Surgery Activities: No driving or operating machinery while taking narcotic pain medications for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Diet Preparation: The day prior to surgery prepare soft foods (i.e. Jell-O, applesauce) as well as plenty of clear fluids to drink (i.e. Gatorade and apple juice).
  • No Smoking: No smoking/vaping/marijuana for 5 days after surgery and 24 hours prior to surgery (to prevent dry sockets).
  • No Alcohol: Avoid alcohol 24 hours prior to anesthesia/surgery.
  • Appointment Schedule: Due to our high surgery volume, your surgery time may change. Please contact our office 24 hours before surgery to verify the final arrival time.
    • Be prepared to wait. Although we do our best to stay on time, delays are not uncommon.
    • We reserve the right to reschedule your surgery based on lack of medical information, recent vaccinations, cold/flu like symptoms or sinus infections.
  • Cancellation Policy: Please give the office 48 hours advanced notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment to avoid a $100 fee.
